I’ll be posting today about my favorite comic book fathers. This is Marko from SAGA. He was a rebel fighter from Wreath who was imprisoned and then fell in love with his captor. They ran away together and had a child named Hazel. The state named them fugitives and is after their lives and their child. Marko does anything he can to protect Hazel. He wields magic for her, jumps in front of bullets, and chews through her umbilical cord.

The Importance of Diversity:

I was reading an article about diversity in television today. It was trying to illuminate how television networks work with the verisimilitude of diversity rather than display a true diverse cast. The article spoke of how diversity on television is now a multi-color display of post-racial America rather than a true embodiment of the racially charged world that we still live in.

Modern television, and seemingly everything else, works on a box check system for most shows. If you have a black character, check off the diversity box; if you have a gay character, check off the diversity box; if you have a Hispanic character, check off the diversity box. This loud disclaim of, “We’re diverse! Don’t you see?!”, is the sort of petty acceptance that I believe is still a cause of racism today. If every character, of every background, acts exactly alike than how is that truly acceptance?

I grew up in a diverse, but moderately wealthy, city in New York and even though everyone had more money than not people were still different. Even though Blacks and Whites and Indians and Islanders and Mets fans and Yankee fans and everyone else had seen each other for their entire lives, there was still division. People may not have been pitching slurs at one another, but they still existed inside of groups of people that they identified most with. There are different histories to every group of people, and inside of a post-racial America (which doesn’t currently exist), the histories would permeate the friendships.

My closest friend is the daughter of a Jamaican Immigrant and that comes up in our conversations quite often. She grew up differently than I did because of that. Her mother had different traditions than my white jewish parents did, and that made her slightly different than I. She calls me up, a few days a month, to tell me of the racism that she has adjusted herself to endure. She doesn’t glide through her life with a blind eye towards racism, either. She doesn’t accept it. She has learned to live without anger, in spite of the world that is telling her that racism doesn’t exist anymore. That, to me, is the biggest injustice towards equality. The most vicious injustice is the portrayal of the world without the electric racism that still exists in most people’s lives. It is real, and to deny that is venomous. To tell the victim’s of injustice that what they experience doesn’t exist makes for a world of division, not of unity.

In my comic book, the character’s issues and pertinent to who they are and where they come from. If there is something to be said for the endurance of injustice, it is that people overcome it. This is a world that is charged with so many different particles, it is scary to think that so many of us exist inside of it, but we do. People get on with their lives, and that is the message that I want to portray. Life is shit, but the heroes that we look up to should be the ones who see the shit and move past it.

I own a large collection of comic books. They sit in their sleeves and are organized by title names. I have collections of Aquaman to Buffy and everything in between. I love the characters, stories, plots and the machinations of comic books, but there is one thing that I don’t run into very often. There are few to no gay comic book heroes.

This is a close issue for me as a gay person. I connect with so many of the heroes and heroines but I always miss the gay aspect. I have had few love stories to identify with beyond the concept of love, which is powerful, but not specific to my life style.

I didn’t write These Quiet Worlds as a gay comic. I wrote These Quiet Worlds as a comic book with a gay character to identify with. I also wrote it with female characters to identify with. My closest personal friends have always been girls who kick more ass than guy I’ve ever known. The photographer, Rosie Wiegand, is another prolific woman whom I look up to. She comes from a family of independent, intelligent, and artistic women. These are the kind of people that will be in my book.

The people for me are the inspirational ones. They are people who set out to be themselves every day of their lives. They fumble and deter but they set out to make a more truthful tomorrow, and I will have them be the heroes of These Quiet Worlds.

Here is a behind-the-scenes photo from the shower scene in These Quiet Worlds. Water angles and temperature complicated this scene a bit. It ended up being my favorite of all the scenes we shot because of the weirdness of it.

The Photographic World: Dorian wakes up after a bewildering dream. All of his friends have left for college and summer break, while he awaits his own departure. He spends his last day, before driving off to California, contemplating what it’s like to have five years of your life taken away by anti-psychotics. He has less than 24 hours to go and he takes his final pill. Who do you become after you’ve been reduced to nothing for such a long time?

The Illustrated World: Dorian, Daphne, and Fiona are waiting for Violet to arrive at Dorian’s house before embarking on a cross-country road trip with each other. It’s a strange time for their world, and more importantly for their generation. They have been marred by the sins of their forefathers and unbeknownst to them, they will each start their own journey to become better than the people that came before them. Shortly before they are about to leave, a remarkable occurrence changes the course of their lives and their story forever.

This is not a story about destiny or fate; this is a story about having identity in a modern world.
